MSNBC's website reported, April 30: New cases of swine flu are pouring in at such a rate that the U.S. government might stop compiling a detailed tabulation. NBC's Nightly News, Robert Bazell reports.  Pouring in?  A handful here, and handful there doesn't sound like "pandemic proportion" when it comes to the flu. Yet, that is what they are warning people of it becoming. Either they are not reporting the real numbers or this situation is being "trumped" up to usher in marching orders.

 

The Washington Post reported on their website, "With the virus now clearly being transmitted person-to-person in the United States, WHO officials said the outbreak appeared to be on a trajectory toward the highest alert level -- "phase 6" -- which is marked by sustained transmission in at least two regions of the world. That would mark the beginning of a pandemic -- a global spread of the virus."  For such a crisis, it seems to have taken a backseat in the newsroom for the last couple of days, considering the U.S. government is expecting it to become phase 6.

According to CBS.com the U.S. government's Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said: "We have been preparing all along as if this is going to be a stage six. Our efforts have been to stay ahead of whatever number the WHO assigns."  Maybe the American people do not realize the severity of what this entails. 

 

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent a memo to some health care providers noting procedures to be followed if the swine flu outbreak eventually makes quarantines necessary. "The Department of Justice has established legal federal authorities pertaining to the implementation of a quarantine and enforcement. Under approval from HHS, the Surgeon General has the authority to issue quarantines."  This includes detaining and quarantining any American "reasonably believed to be infected" with a communicable disease. They also mentioned that "Federal quarantine authority is limited to diseases listed in presidential executive orders; President Bush added "novel" forms of influenza with the potential to create pandemics in Executive Order 13375. Anyone violating a quarantine order can be punished by a $250,000 fine and a one-year prison term."  This is serious and all Americans should be demanding answers at this hour regarding making preparations for quarantines and possible martial law.

This report made regarding the memo from McGaw, Department of Homeland Security's acting assistant secretary for the private sector, also said: "U.S. Customs and Coast Guard Officers assist in the enforcement of quarantine orders. Other DOJ law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives may also enforce quarantines. Military personnel are not authorized to engage in enforcement."

Judging by McGaw's memo on Monday, this is no longer a "what if." His memo stated that the federal plan to respond to pandemic influenza was "in effect."

 

Call me an alarmist, but if this plan is "in effect" shouldn't the American people be told so they can get prepared?
