And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. -John 2:1-4

Yeshua's first miracle was at a wedding-showing the reason for His visitation to earth.

Most commentators explain this verse to mean His hour of ministry was not yet. Mary, His mother, was pushing for Him to do something, a miracle of some sort. However, this had nothing to do with the start of His earthly ministry performing a miracle. Yeshua was already a Rabbi and His ministry had already begun as He had a few of His disciples with Him. She did not ask Yeshua to do anything-it was He in fact, that brought this situation to the forefront. "They wanted wine"-His response to her was, "What does this have to do with me?" The governor of the feast handled the matters, such as running out of food and wine, or took it up with the bridegroom or the bridegroom's father as we see in Scripture.

Continuing in John 2:9-10, we see:

When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

Yeshua asked for "more wine," and His mother's response was there is no more wine. She didn't ask Him to fix the problem-this was a situation for the bridegroom, not Him. His answer insinuated, "I am not the bridegroom yet."

In Mark 2:18-20, Yeshua referred to Himself as the bridegroom:

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

John the Baptist also referred to Yeshua as the bridegroom in John 3:28-30:

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.

In Yeshua's first recorded miracle at the wedding at Cana, He shows us when His hour "as the bridegroom" will be and that this is a prophetic charade of His true reason for coming to the earth.

The six stone pots are six days of creation, which is 6,000 years (2 Peter 3:8). These stone pots were 20-30 gallon earthen vessels, used for ceremonial washing-thus, unclean. They were filled to brim with new wine-symbolizing the abundance and overflowing joy we can have with Him. This wine also represents the Sabbath, or seventh day-the 1,000-year rest for the earth when He reigns.

Stone water pots, once used in the Jewish custom of washing outward parts, were now filled to the brim with new wine, symbolic of the inward cleansing power and new life we have with Yeshua!

Delight must have filled the young groom's heart as he tasted it, knowing the Savior blessed his marriage with an overflowing abundance of wine. Now the week-long celebration could continue, with the Sheva B'rachot blessings spoken over the second cup of wine, sealing the marriage covenant. For a wedding is incomplete without this. This is why Yeshua said in Matthew 26:29: "I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."

The bride is now betrothed to her Heavenly Bridegroom, and our marriage to Yeshua will not be complete until we are in Heaven and share this second cup of wine with Him, just as He said in Matthew 26:29. He has saved the very best for last! We must be faithful until that day!
