Just when everyone breathes a sigh of relief from the Swine Flu scare, we are faced with yet another mysterious deadly pathogen on the loose. According to Chattahbox's website, "It's a virulent airborne fungus that scientists believe may have originated from eucalyptus trees in tropical and subtropical climates. How it arrived in Oregon and other West Coast states is a mystery. Some scientists believe the spreading of a tropical pathogen to North America may be the result of global warming. But whatever the cause, it's spreading fast throughout the U.S. and Canada, can't be prevented and has a 25 percent mortality rate." Oddly, Eucalyptus essential oil is known as one of the most effective oils for upper respiratory infections. Chattahbox's health article continues, "The deadly fungus is known as VGIIc of the fungus Cryptococcus gattii. And it also infects a variety of animals, including dogs, sheep and dolphins. The fungus is not spread from contact, but instead is floating around in the air waiting to be inhaled."

Fortunately for those who understand how to use essential oils can combat this pathogen simply by diffusing therapeutic-grade essential oils into the air to kill viruses and bacteria. Other applications for applying essential oils as well can protect the user from becoming infected.

The truth regarding the healing properties of essential oils has long been neglected and misunderstood by most. While many Aromatherapists in the US still relegate essential oils to the support of the psyche studies continue to confirm the antibacterial and antiviral effects of essential oils. True Medical Aromatherapists around the globe are saying, "The most effective use of essential oils for health is the combating of infectious illness."

In Tarah Michelle Cech, ND's online post "Essential Oil's Anti-Viral Effects," she writes, "Interest is growing regarding the immune-supportive effects of essential oils, and particularly their antiviral actions. The world's leading aroma-medicine practitioners consider protection from infectious diseases one of aromatherapy's most effective applications. Many essential oils have demonstrated anti-viral effects, through multiple pathways: By preventing virus replication, through improving the efficiency of our white blood cells, and by changing electrical potential of our cell walls."

Within each plant's oil is the complex makeup of 200 to 800 chemical constituents, making it difficult for viruses and bacteria to mutate and acquire resistance to them. Many have been proven to be more effective than even antibiotics.

In an internet article entitled, Essential Oils For Cold Care And A Strong Immune System, the author writes, "Because of their chemical structure, essential oils are easily absorbed into the human body, passing through cell membranes, then into the bloodstream due to their lipophillic' nature (a structure in alignment with the lipid components of our cell walls). Essential oils can protect us from microbes in many different ways, from keeping the space around us naturally microbe-free, to readying our immune system for defense, to actually destroying the microbes once they've entered our bodies.

Simply by diffusing essential oils into the air, the oils eliminate microbes in the air, thus reducing the concentration of live pathogens you may be inhaling or touching at any time and reducing the load on your immune system. Second, most essential oils, and particularly the strong anti-microbial ones, have an uplifting effect on the psyche and a sharpening effect on the mind. And finally, essential oils can fortify your own immune system to prevent you from catching an illness in the first place with some studies that have shown mammalian cells having increased resistance to microbial invaders after exposure to essential oils."

Essential oils have been effective in combating superbugs and stopping plagues for millenniums. In biblical times, the Lord told Moses to stop the plague that had broken out by taking fire and placing it upon the incense containing aromatics and to quickly run through the camp (Numbers 16:36). During the 15th century, a group of crooks robbed jewels off of dead bodies that had died from the bubonic plague. Even while the disease was highly contagious none of the robbers grew sick or died, because they protected themselves by wearing essential oils.

In this complex high-tech pandemic era, it would do us a world of good to step back and reread God's original prescription for mankind. Ezekiel 47:12, says "the leaf thereof for medicine" and in Revelation 22:2 it reads, "and the leaves of the trees were for the healing of the nations."

While essential oils are a powerful weapon against viral pathogens that attempt to invade the body and are equipped with antimicrobial compounds that can be beneficial to man, we don't claim essential oils to be "wonder drugs." Conventional medicine has its place, and should absolutely be employed when it will provide the best results. Alternative medicine such as aromatherapy in relation to essential oils offers a reasonable solution, and can be effective if used sensibly and with good judgment.
